LAST DAYS IN MOERS

Documentary Short – 19 Min, 2022

Matt Mottel and Kevin Shea, two free jazz musicians from New York, spent 2021 (and the series of lockdowns in entailed) in Moers, a small city on the lower Rhine in Germany. As the city’s official "Improvisers in Residence", they lived together in a house on the market square where they honed their craft, collaborated with other improvisers from the region, and integrated themselves into the Moers community… well… they did their best under the circumstances…
LAST DAYS IN MOERS follows the duo as their year in Germany comes to a close, and they attempt to pull off one last concert in Moers as a thank you to their host-city. The plan is to bring their brand of psychedelia-tinged free-improvisation to the people. And what could be a better venue than the city’s traditional Christmas market…
Inspired by the music of Mottel and Shea, this short documentary investigates the spirit of improvisation, weaving new textures and structures from chaos, mundanity, chance and repetition.
